Eagle Rock

Eagle Rock is a culturally rich community with a small-town feel.  Originally part of Rancho San Rafael, it became its own city in 1911 and part of Los Angeles in 1923.  The name Eagle Rock has imbedded roots in the community, it comes from a rock that sits just above the 134 Freeway.  This rock is naturally etched so when the light hits it just right, there is a very visible eagle with fully spread wings.  A great spot to view this is the freeway entrance ramp on Colorado at Linda Rosa Ave.   Voted, along their surrounding neighbors over the last few years, as one of Los Angeles' Hottest Neighborhoods, it sits with its north end just straddling the 134 Freeway, Pasadena to the east, Glendale to the west and Glassell Park and Highland Park to the south.

The community is thriving.  Colorado Blvd and Eagle Rock Blvd are lined with quaint shops and restaurants and a weekly farmers market. Many of the art galleries participate in the NELA Art Walk that takes place the second Saturday of every month when galleries and restaurant stay open for an evening of art, good food and fun.  Notable past residents include Marlon Brando as well as Ben Affleck and Matt Damon who were roommates when they penned Good Will Hunting from their home on Hill Dr.

Eagle Rock has one of the most eclectic array of home styles with the Arts and Crafts Craftsman and Victorian farmhouses from the early 20th century to modern, mid-century and post-war traditional homes, as well. Prominent architects left their marks throughout the city. Myron Hunt designed the layout of Occidental College, one of the finest Liberal Arts schools in the county. Richard Neutra designed the Eagle Rock Recreation Center which is an expansion of his unique home design. Threatened with destruction in the 1980’s, it was designated an historical-cultural monument and has been preserved.  Today to stands as an excellent example of Mid-Century Modern design and a testament to how Eagle Rock, in the postwar period, embraced Moderism.
