Pasadena

Pasadena is a dynamite city located about 10 minutes northeast of downtown Los Angeles situated between the San Gabriel Mountains and the Arroyo Seco.  Its City Vision Statement says it all: “Pasadena will combine world class events, science and technology, arts and culture, history and architecture with great neighborhoods and opportunities for all.” Pasadena has lived up to this vision and thus has become one of the highly desirable areas in southern California to live and work.

Pasadena is a mecca for architecture and has over 30 Historic Districts, thus is a leader in historic preservation.  The area began as a resort town in the 1880’s and has been blessed with an influx of famous architects who have left their crafts mark along the way.  There are beautiful Craftsman Bungalows by Henry and Charles Greene from the early 1900’s, one of them being The Gamble House, built in 1908, an Arts and Crafts masterpiece, known for its comfort, wood details and art.  The 1920’s Revival homes brought in the Spanish Colonials, French Revival, Mission and Mediterranean styles, as well as English Cottage, Tudor, Gothic and more.  Wallace Neff, Myron Hunt and Sylvanus Marston are some of the other extraordinarily talented architects who have graced Pasadena with some of the most beautiful homes in the country.

Old Town Pasadena is also an Urban Conservation Zone, where the city has preserved the 1920’s commercial buildings, enhancing the existing architectural features and updated store fronts and alleys to create a highly successful town center with shops, restaurants and entertainment.  The main street is Colorado, but you can find unique shops and wonderful restaurants on the side streets, like Union, Green, Raymond and Walnut, so it’s worth the wander.

Home to the Rose Bowl, Pasadena hosts the annual Rose Bowl Game usually held on January 1st which is also they day of the Rose Bowl Parade (unless the 1st falls on the Sunday – then it will be on the 2nd.).  This annual event brings thousands of people into the city. But the Rose Bowl also hosts sporting events from USC and UCLA as well as concerts and events throughout the year, so there is always something to look forward to.

Cultural and educational destinations abound in the area with the Norton Simon Museum, USC Pacific Asia Museum, the Kidspace Children’s Museum, and the Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens (technically in San Marino) as well as California Institute of Technology and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).

With its placement along the Arroyo, there are parks, walking and bike paths, hiking trails and wonderful spaces to get out and enjoy all the beauty that Pasadena and Southern California has to offer.  It’s a wonderful place to live.  The summer 2019 median home value in Pasadena, according to Zillow, was approximately $825,000, but the closer one gets to the Arroyo, the higher the value.  The Pasadena home market has its many neighborhoods and nuances so work with someone who knows the market and has a true understanding of the area.  For more information, contact Lisa Lorentson.
